10 Sustainable Products That Actually Work (Not Just Look Good)

Sustainable products have a reputation problem. Too many of them are expensive, don't perform well, and exist mostly to make buyers feel good rather than solve a real problem.

This list is different. These are the 10 sustainable products we've tested, use regularly, and would genuinely recommend to anyone — regardless of how "green" they are.

1. Reusable Beeswax Wraps

Replace: Plastic cling wrap.

Beeswax wraps mold to whatever they're covering using the warmth of your hands. They're washable, last 6–12 months with regular use, and compostable at end of life. The performance is genuinely on par with plastic wrap for most food storage use cases.

Find them in our Home collection.

2. Bamboo Dish Brush Set

Replace: Plastic-handled dish scrubbers.

Bamboo handles + natural bristles. They work exactly like conventional dish brushes, last longer than foam sponges (which harbor bacteria), and the bamboo handle is fully biodegradable. One of the most straightforward no-compromise swaps on this list.

3. Castile Soap (Concentrated)

Replace: Multiple specialized cleaners.

A single bottle of concentrated castile soap — diluted at different ratios — replaces your dish soap, all-purpose cleaner, and hand soap. It's plant-derived, biodegradable, and genuinely effective. The economics work out significantly cheaper than buying separate products.

Browse our Home products for the formulas we recommend.

4. Organic Cotton Produce Bags

Replace: Plastic produce bags at the grocery store.

Mesh organic cotton bags weigh almost nothing (so they don't throw off your scale at checkout), are washable, and last years. A set of 10 costs less than a few months of plastic bag use. The barrier to this swap is approximately zero.

5. Shampoo Bar

Replace: Liquid shampoo in a plastic bottle.

A quality shampoo bar lasts as long as 2–3 bottles of liquid shampoo and ships without water (which makes up ~80% of liquid shampoo's weight and volume). There's a 2-3 week adjustment period as your scalp recalibrates — push through it.

Look for sulfate-free formulas in our Personal Care collection.

6. Organic Tallow Soap

Replace: Synthetic bar soap or body wash.

Tallow soap is one of the oldest skincare products that exists. It's shelf-stable, deeply moisturizing, and requires zero synthetic additives. Modern tallow soaps from organic producers are genuinely excellent — better than most synthetic alternatives for skin that needs moisture.

7. Compostable Trash Bags

Replace: Conventional plastic garbage bags.

This swap requires some nuance: compostable bags only break down in industrial composting facilities, not in landfills. But if your municipality has compost pickup or you compost at home, they're a genuine improvement. For those without composting access, it's still better — they produce less microplastic as they degrade.

8. Stainless Steel Water Bottle

Replace: Disposable plastic water bottles.

This one everyone knows, but it's worth including because the math is staggering: the average person buys 156 plastic water bottles per year. A $30 stainless steel bottle pays for itself in under a month and lasts a decade. This is the highest-ROI sustainable swap that exists.

9. LED Bulbs with Smart Dimming

Replace: Any remaining incandescent or halogen bulbs.

If you still have non-LED bulbs anywhere in your home, replace them next time they burn out. Modern LEDs last 15,000–25,000 hours (vs. 1,000 for incandescents), use 75% less energy, and produce better quality light. No trade-off here — it's purely better in every dimension.

10. Concentrated Laundry Strips

Replace: Liquid or powder laundry detergent in plastic jugs.

Laundry strips are pre-measured, concentrated sheets that dissolve completely in water — no plastic jug, no wasted water weight in shipping, and they store flat in a small cardboard box. Performance is comparable to liquid detergent, and they're measurably better on the fragrance-free front.

The Real Test for Sustainable Products

Ask one question: Would I keep using this if it weren't sustainable?

If the answer is no — if you only use it to feel good — it's not actually solving the problem. The products on this list all pass that test. They're better products that happen to be sustainable, not sustainable products making performance compromises.
